The complete website redesign checklist (UK, 2026)
Most website redesigns fail quietly: the new site looks better, but enquiries drop because rankings were lost, key pages vanished, or the thing that was actually working got redesigned away. This checklist prevents that.
Before anything: audit what you have
- List every page on your current site (a crawl tool or your sitemap does this in minutes)
- Identify which pages actually get traffic and which generate enquiries — protect these at all costs
- Note your current Google rankings for the searches that matter to your business
- Screenshot everything — you'll want references later
- Confirm you control your domain registrar login and hosting access before touching anything
Define what "better" means
"Fresher look" is not a goal. Pick measurable ones: more enquiries per month, faster load time, working mobile experience, ranking for specific local searches. Every design decision then has a test: does it serve the goal?
Protect your SEO (the step everyone skips)
- Map every old URL to its new equivalent and set up 301 redirects — this is how you keep rankings
- Keep (or improve) page titles and meta descriptions on pages that already rank
- Don't delete pages with inbound links or traffic just because they're old
- Regenerate and resubmit your sitemap after launch
Content, before design
- Rewrite your homepage headline to state what you do, for whom, and the next step
- Refresh proof: recent reviews, current photos, up-to-date client examples
- Check every fact — prices, opening hours, service areas, team members
- Cut pages nobody visits; merge thin pages into strong ones
The build itself
- Mobile-first: design and test at phone sizes before desktop
- Performance budget: aim for loading in under 2.5 seconds on a mid-range phone
- One clear call-to-action on every page
- Forms tested end-to-end: does a submission actually reach a monitored inbox?
- Basic accessibility: readable contrast, labelled forms, sensible heading structure
Launch day
- Redirects live and spot-checked against your old-URL list
- SSL certificate active (https, no browser warnings)
- Forms re-tested on the live domain, from a phone
- Analytics reconnected so you can compare against pre-launch numbers
The 30 days after
- Watch Search Console for crawl errors and ranking movement
- Compare enquiry volume with pre-redesign — this is the metric that matters
- Fix the small breakages that only appear with real users
A redesign done in this order is boring — and boring is what you want. The drama-free version keeps your rankings, keeps your enquiries, and simply works better than what it replaced.
